# How to Prepare for Aadhaar Authentication During GST Registration ## Follow the route assigned to the application Aadhaar authentication is one part of GST registration identity verification. GSTN's registration guidance describes OTP-based and biometric-based processes, with the route determined through the portal's data and risk checks. Biometric authentication is not mandatory for every applicant, so prepare for the actual communication rather than assuming all owners must immediately book an appointment. The business constitution and selected roles matter. A proprietor, partnership, company and LLP do not necessarily present the same set of individuals for authentication. Read the live application's authentication tab and identify the person or persons selected, including the primary authorised signatory. Writing an Aadhaar number in a spreadsheet is not completion of authentication. ## Check identity consistency before submission Compare each selected person's name and required identity information against the relevant records. GSTN's manual highlights name mismatch between the registration application and UIDAI details as a possible authentication issue. Resolve a genuine source-record problem through the appropriate process rather than submitting multiple speculative spellings. Keep entity identity separate from personal identity. The company's PAN identifies the company, while a selected director's Aadhaar identifies that individual. Do not enter a director's personal PAN as the applicant's PAN to create a superficial name match. The application needs both the correct entity and correct people in their respective fields. Check whether the promoter or partner and primary authorised signatory are the same individual. Where they are different, coordinate both people's availability and applicable steps. One successful authentication does not necessarily complete the other person's requirement. Keep a simple status list with the person's role and whether the portal confirms completion. ## Understand the two contact paths The GST portal sends the authentication link to the contacts recorded in the registration application. The Aadhaar OTP is associated with the contact channels linked with Aadhaar. GSTN's guidance explains that GST-registered contacts and UIDAI-registered contacts can differ. Knowing which phone receives which message prevents avoidable confusion. Before filing, confirm the selected person can access the relevant phone or email through the proper process. An adviser receiving the application link does not automatically have access to the individual's Aadhaar OTP. Do not make a group chat the permanent location for sharing identity verification codes or personal documents. If Aadhaar contact information needs correction, allow time for the relevant update before relying on an imminent OTP step. Do not promise an immediate GST approval merely because the business has all its invoices ready. Identity authentication, application submission and officer processing are separate stages with their own requirements. ## Keep the validity window visible GSTN's current registration manual describes a fifteen-day validity for the authentication link and the associated application process, with ARN generation depending on completion of the applicable persons' authentication. Follow the actual email and portal dates, especially where a TRN or application stage is approaching expiry. Create a calendar reminder well before the final day and record outstanding steps. Where the portal offers a resend link, follow its current limits rather than repeatedly requesting new links across multiple browser tabs. A new message does not necessarily extend the underlying application window, so check the status instead of inferring a fresh deadline. Illustratively, two partners prepare a registration application on Monday, but the selected signatory is travelling with an inactive Aadhaar-linked phone. The sensible preparation is to resolve that access issue and coordinate the selected persons before the window closes. Uploading additional unrelated documents cannot substitute for the missing identity-verification step. ## Complete OTP authentication carefully Use the official authentication link and check the identity of the selected person. Read the consent and information shown, enter the required Aadhaar or VID information as permitted and complete the OTP verification through the indicated process. Keep personal authentication under that individual's control rather than asking someone else to impersonate them. After a success message, return to the application status and confirm that all applicable persons are shown as complete. Save relevant confirmation evidence without retaining unnecessary sensitive numbers in broadly shared folders. If authentication fails, note the actual error, date and person affected so the next action can address the cause. GSTN's guidance describes a resend route through saved applications for relevant cases. Use it only as applicable and avoid confusing new-registration authentication with the separate My Profile process for existing taxpayers. Instructions written for an already registered person may not resolve an incomplete TRN-based application. Read failure messages for their stated reason. A name mismatch, locked Aadhaar-related setting and an unavailable OTP channel are different problems and may require different corrective action. Keep the error reference without circulating the full identity record unnecessarily, then follow the applicable official resolution route. This is more useful than trying the same unsuccessful step repeatedly without changing its cause. ## Prepare differently if a GSK visit is required If the communication requires biometric authentication, follow the appointment link for the designated GST Suvidha Kendra. Review which people must attend, which originals they must bring and whether a home-State facility is actually available for their constitution and role. The selected promoter and primary signatory can have different permitted arrangements. Biometric verification and business-premises physical verification are separate processes. Attending a GSK does not mean an officer has verified the shop or warehouse. Likewise, a site visit does not automatically complete an individual authentication step. Track each requirement independently against the application status. A successful preparation ends with accurate identities, working contact paths, the required persons available and the actual authentication confirmed. That gives the business a much stronger foundation than treating Aadhaar as a single attachment to upload and forgetting the messages that follow. ## Sources and references - [GSTN: Applying for normal taxpayer registration](https://tutorial.gst.gov.in/userguide/registration/Apply_for_Registration_Normal_Taxpayer.htm) - [GSTN: Registration and biometric authentication FAQs](https://tutorial.gst.gov.in/userguide/registration/General.htm) - [GSTN: Aadhaar authentication for existing taxpayers](https://tutorial.gst.gov.in/userguide/registration/manual_aadhaar.htm) - [GSTN advisory: biometric authentication and document verification, 28 January 2025](https://www.mahagst.gov.in/public/uploads/gstnadvisory/1760597527_327%20Advisory%20for%20Biometric-Based%20Aadhaar%20Authentication%20and%20Document%20Verification%20for%20GSTRegistration%20Applicants%20of%20Tamil%20Nadu%20and%20Himachal%20Pradesh.pdf)
