# How to Track a GST Registration Application Using Its ARN ## Use the right reference for the right stage An Application Reference Number, or ARN, identifies a submitted GST registration application in the relevant workflow. GSTN provides pre-login tracking for registration-related applications, including new registration and certain later applications. The tracking result helps you see where the application stands; it is not itself a registration certificate or permission to use an assumed GSTIN. A Temporary Reference Number, or TRN, serves the application preparation and associated verification stage. Do not confuse saving a draft under a TRN with generating an ARN. Where required authentication or document verification remains incomplete, the application may not yet have reached the submitted stage that produces an ARN. ## Find the acknowledgement and applicant details Locate the official acknowledgement or message containing the ARN. Check the applicant name, PAN, State and application type against your records. A business applying in two States may hold different references, and a signatory may receive messages for several entities. Searching an unrelated ARN can create a misleading impression about the application you actually need to monitor. Keep a simple register with reference, legal name, State, submission date, application category and responsible person. Save the final submitted application and attachments alongside it. This makes tracking useful when a staff member is absent and avoids depending on one person's memory of which message belongs to which business. For incorporation-linked applications, GSTN also describes tracking using the MCA Service Request Number. Its current manual includes an IFSCA Financial Reference Number route where applicable. Use the reference issued for the actual submission channel rather than assuming every applicant starts with an ordinary GST portal ARN. ## Open the official tracking workflow Go to the official GST portal and choose the Track Application Status service. GSTN's current manual describes selecting the Registration module, entering the appropriate ARN or other supported reference and searching. Follow the live form, including any captcha or required reference selection, because navigation labels can change over time. Check the detailed result rather than only the first coloured stage. GSTN displays the application history and current status. Record the date of your check and any action already taken. If several people monitor the application, share the factual result so they do not each attempt a different response to the same notice. A missing result does not automatically mean rejection. Recheck the reference for transcription errors and confirm whether the application has actually generated an ARN. If there is a genuine portal issue, retain the error and use official support with the correct references. Avoid submitting a duplicate application merely because a search failed once. ## Interpret common statuses as action signals “Pending for Processing” means the submitted application is awaiting the relevant processing step. “Site Verification Assigned” indicates that the application has been marked for a premises visit. “Site Verification Completed” indicates that the verification report has reached the relevant stage; it does not mean every other registration issue has been resolved. “Pending for Clarification” needs immediate attention to the actual notice. Download it, identify the deadline and prepare the prescribed response. “Clarification filed—Pending for order” means the reply has been submitted and the application awaits an outcome. Do not confuse that status with a request to submit the same reply repeatedly. GSTN also lists approved, rejected and withdrawn outcomes. Each requires its own record check. An approved status should lead to the certificate and login setup; a rejected status should lead to the reasoned order; a withdrawal should be understood from the actual application history. A brief status label cannot replace those documents. ## Work through a tracking example Illustratively, a partnership submits an application for a Lucknow shop and records its ARN on 4 September. On 8 September, the owner sees “Pending for Clarification.” The useful action is to obtain the REG-03 notice and answer its issues, not to call the landlord and assume the application is waiting for a routine visit. After the authorised reply is filed, the team checks for the “Clarification filed—Pending for order” stage and keeps its acknowledgement. If the dashboard still shows the earlier label, it compares the submitted reply record and checks for a processing issue. An internal document labelled “final reply” is not enough without submission evidence. Suppose the owner has already purchased ₹3 lakh of equipment. That expenditure does not change what the tracking status means or guarantee approval. Keep purchase and opening records separately while monitoring the registration process. Business urgency should not be converted into an assumption that the application is approved before the certificate is available. ## Deal with delays using a complete file Compare the application facts and dates with the applicable processing rules and any clarification or verification step. Timelines can depend on the route and events, so avoid using one universal day count for every applicant. A business selected for additional verification is not necessarily in the same position as a complete application following a different route. When seeking help, provide the ARN, applicant identity, submission and status dates, relevant notice or reply references and a concise description of the unresolved issue. Do not send an entire unrelated accounting folder. A clear chronology helps distinguish a portal error from a missing action or a pending officer decision. Keep tracking until the relevant outcome is available, then complete the corresponding next steps. For approval, verify the certificate and effective date and begin post-registration setup. The ARN register remains part of the business history, linking the application and its evidence to the GST registration that ultimately results. ## Sources and references - [GSTN: Tracking registration applications before login](https://tutorial.gst.gov.in/userguide/registration/Track_Application_Status_(Pre-Login).htm) - [GSTN: Applying for normal taxpayer registration](https://tutorial.gst.gov.in/userguide/registration/Apply_for_Registration_Normal_Taxpayer.htm) - [GSTN: Registration and biometric authentication FAQs](https://tutorial.gst.gov.in/userguide/registration/General.htm) - [CBIC Instruction 03/2025-GST, 17 April 2025](https://static.pib.gov.in/WriteReadData/specificdocs/documents/2025/apr/doc2025418542101.pdf)
